Leadership and governance figure prominently among the major concerns of the theory and practice of management but are rarely brought together in theoretical and empirical analysis. We believe there is an important relationship between the two which requires closer scrutiny. Indeed, effective institutions of governance ensure smooth functioning of organizations and markets under uncertainty and minimize the need for and the impact of interventions by individual actors. At the same time, leadership is essentially about effective interventions and therefore appears to be in opposition to governance. The proposed conference will explore the ways to reconcile the two concepts by focusing on social networks as a governance mechanism, on one hand, and a leadership tool, on the other. The goal is to bring together sociologists and organizations scholars who made contributions to the literatures on both, governance and leadership, and therefore are uniquely positioned to explore the relationship between them.
